Kevin Costner is a patriarch who runs a dynastic ranch the size of several countries. His way of life is being undermined by resort developers, tribal rights, and Montana state government. Reminiscent of Rock Hudson in “Giant,” he tries to stick to the old ways.

Costner seems to fill his character’s shoes naturally

“Yellowstone” moves quickly with little introduction, but its story unfolds at the natural pace of a desert day, pausing between tribal rituals, cowboy deals, and political machinations. It’s a far-fetched affair, torn at the seams of law and justice, family and friendship. He’s a world-weary man who’s seen too much and lied too often.

The land and family are his lifeblood

He hears footsteps approaching, but can only play his part out of habit, as much as loyalty. While some of the action is a little confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting a real slice of life glimpse into another world. I hope the resolution of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.

I’m raising the grade to "9"

Update 2018-07-20: After four episodes, the tone of this series is strong and the rhythm is persistent. We learn the fullness of each story, from the roots to the fruit.
